In today’s world, teens spend a lot of time on social media. Whether it’s Instagram, TikTok, or YouTube, social media is a big part of many young people’s lives. While social media can be fun, it can also be harmful, especially for teens and adults.
It’s not just about spending too much time scrolling through posts. Social media companies use specific business practices to keep users hooked, which can harm mental health. These practices are especially dangerous for young people whose brains are still developing.
Holding Tech Companies Accountable
Experts say that using social media too much is becoming an addiction, and it’s contributing to a mental health crisis among young people. Despite this, the industry hasn’t made many changes, and there are no federal policies to help protect kids.
In May 2023, the U.S. Surgeon General issued a warning about the harmful effects of social media on the mental health of young people. The American Psychological Association also released a report linking social media use to increased depression and anxiety, especially among people aged 10 to 25.
Even though social media problems are national and international, things can still be done locally. This is a critical issue right here at home, and the government needs to do its part.
Social Media’s Statistics
The rise of social media use among teens has been staggering. Around 2010, when smartphones were still new, only about half of teens reported using social media. This number has surged to 95 percent, with about one-third reporting constant use. Teens now spend an average of five hours daily on social media, mostly on Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube.
At the same time that social media use among teens has increased, their mental health has declined. Young people aged 15 to 24 face the highest rates of depression and visit emergency rooms for depression and anxiety at twice the rate of any other age group.
As of June 2024, 475 lawsuits against social media companies are pending in the Northern District of California. Forty-one U.S. states, including California, have taken legal action against Meta Platforms, Inc. (which owns Facebook and Instagram) for not protecting minors on their platforms.
A Solution: Get Active and Involved
To reduce the time spent on social media, teens need to be involved in sports and community activities. These activities not only provide a healthy alternative to screen time but also help in building strong social connections and improving overall well-being. By encouraging teens to participate in such activities, we can help them lead happier, healthier lives.
Joining a sports team or volunteering in the community can give teens a sense of purpose and accomplishment. These activities teach important life skills such as teamwork, communication, and problem-solving. Plus, they help teens make new friends and stay physically active, which is great for their overall health.
Parents, teachers, and community leaders can play a big role in encouraging teens to get involved. Providing opportunities for sports and community service can help steer teens away from excessive social media use and toward more fulfilling and positive activities.
For example, a new app called Street Stewards, built for city community service, can help teens be part of a big movement, provide a positive outcome in volunteering for their neighborhood, and help other teens stay off screens. I believe that connecting teens and young adults together can help not only keep our cities clean but also improve the mental health of our community.
By encouraging teens to engage in meaningful activities like sports and community service, we can create a supportive environment that promotes their well-being and reduces the negative impacts of excessive social media use. Let’s work together to guide our youth towards healthier, more fulfilling lives.
Social media is a big part of modern life, but finding a balance is important. By getting involved in sports and community activities, teens can reduce the time they spend online and improve their mental and physical health. Let’s work together to create a healthier and happier future for our young people.
