From Student to Junior DA: My Unforgettable Journey at the San Diego County District Attorney Junior DA Academy

In July 2025, I had the incredible opportunity to participate in the San Diego County District Attorney Junior DA Academy, held at the Hall of Justice in downtown San Diego. This immersive program wasn’t just an introduction to the criminal justice system—it was a hands-on, eye-opening experience that deepened my understanding of law, advocacy, and public service.

A Prestigious Beginning

Walking into the 13th floor conference room of the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office, I was welcomed by a team of dedicated professionals who made us feel like real members of the legal community. From the start, I knew this wasn’t going to be a typical summer program.

Throughout the week, we met with some of the most influential people in the county’s justice system, including District Attorney Summer Stephan, Assistant District Attorney Dwain Woodley, judges from the San Diego County Superior Court, and many others. Their stories, insights, and commitment to justice were deeply inspiring and made a lasting impact.

Learning Beyond the Books

Each day was packed with engaging presentations and interactive sessions. We heard from law enforcement officers, crime scene experts, and victim advocates who gave us a behind-the-scenes look at how justice is pursued and upheld in our community.

One of the most heartwarming moments was meeting Ollie, the courthouse therapy dog. His presence reminded us that the justice system isn’t only about trials and evidence—it’s also about compassion and supporting victims through some of the hardest moments of their lives.

Stepping Into the Courtroom

One of the highlights of the academy was our mock trial held in a real Superior Court courtroom. Taking on the roles of attorneys, witnesses, and jurors, we argued our cases, examined evidence, and presented in front of an actual judge. It was thrilling, challenging, and incredibly rewarding. I gained confidence in public speaking and learned the value of preparation, teamwork, and critical thinking.

A Graduation to Remember

At the end of the academy, we were honored with a Junior DA diploma, officially graduating as San Diego County Junior DAs. Receiving that diploma in a courtroom where real justice is served was an unforgettable moment—and a symbol of all we had learned and accomplished in just a few days.

A Program That Inspires

The Junior DA Academy is more than a summer experience—it’s a glimpse into a future of service, leadership, and justice. It empowers students like me to better understand the system, connect with professionals, and envision our place in making a difference.

I’m grateful to the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office for this incredible opportunity. I left inspired, informed, and motivated to keep learning—and maybe one day, return not as a student, but as a voice for justice.

Now, I proudly carry the title of Junior DA—and this is just the beginning.
